Amiga, how many of us move through life feeling like we’re always adjusting, always translating, always finding our place depending on where we are? You can return to a place that once felt like home and realize you’ve changed. And then you come back to your life here and feel like you’ve learned how to live it, but not always how to belong in it. This tension is real, and it doesn’t always have words.

I’ve come to see that this isn’t something to fix. It’s what happens when a life stretches across lands, across histories, across ways of being. We carry more than one rhythm inside of us. And instead of forcing ourselves to choose, maybe the work is learning how to stay in relationship with where we come from and where we are now.

There is a difference between what is recognized as art and what is already functioning as art within a place.

In regions where history is carefully preserved, visibility often follows what has already been defined.

But artistic expression extends beyond those boundaries.
It lives in practice, in process, and in the ways people give form to meaning in their everyday lives.

Art is not separate from culture.
It is how a community expresses its memory, its identity, and its evolving voice.

In a district like Mount Vernon, VA, that expression is already present across disciplines, communities, and forms.

The work is to expand what is recognized as part of the artistic landscape.

To see more clearly.
To support more intentionally.
To allow that expression to be held alongside history, not outside of it.

I step into this role from that place of responsibility, within a structure that honors preservation, while also expanding how the arts are seen and supported in the present.

A veces no es solo el presente,
es memoria.

La incertidumbre que siente el cuerpo es real.
Y aunque parezca que lo estás sintiendo a solas… no lo estás.

Un lugar donde mujeres se reunieron para escuchar, reflexionar y recordar lo que el cuerpo ya sabe.

Me fui con una sensación de reconocimiento… de lo que puede emerger cuando nos sentimos lo suficientemente seguras para estar presentes.

Agradecida por haber sido invitada como panelista y por sostener los espacios grupales que se dieron.

Hay espacios que se quedan en el cuerpo… este fue uno de ellos.
