There are moments when we find ourselves between worlds.
Trying to adapt, to belong, to understand how to live in a place that feels unfamiliar.

In Andean thought, we honor the Chakana, a representation of Pacha philosophy, a living system where time, space, nature, and life are not separate, but exist in constant relationship.

The Chakana, or Southern Cross, has long been used as an organizing principle for science, culture, and society in the Andes. Rooted in Quechua, it represents a bridge that unifies time and space. As observed in Andean cultural astronomy, its four stars align in a near-perfect vertical and horizontal point once a year, understood as a moment of connection between the spiritual and earthly realms, that sometimes is described as a “day outside of time.”

The Chakana reflects continuity.
Everything is connected in Hanaq Pacha, Kay Pacha, Uku Pacha. What is above, what is here, and what is within.

Its structure also reflects order and relationship. Each point holds meaning within a larger whole, reminding us that life moves through cycles we are part of, not separate from.

When we feel disoriented or disconnected, it is not only internal.
It is a disruption in relationship.

Pacha philosophy reminds us that emotional wellbeing is relational. It lives in how we connect with our body, with others, with the natural environment, and with the cycles that sustain life.

One of its core principles is reciprocity, to give, receive, and contribute in balance.

From this perspective, adapting to a new environment does not require erasing who we are.

We are not meant to start over. We are meant to become the bridge.

People often ask me why I write poetry…
and how it fits into my work as an ecopsychologist and therapist.

The answer is actually very simple.

Not everything we’ve been through can be fully explained.
Some experiences don’t fit into clear language.

They live in the body, in memory, in how we move through the different environments we’re part of, including the natural world.

Poetry, for me, is a way of staying close to that. A way of listening… and giving shape to what I feel.

There are spaces where this kind of expression can unfold,
slowly, and in good company.

I attended the Peru Conference at Harvard, organized by the Peruvian Students Association. The space brought together research, ideas, and lived experience in a way that felt thoughtful, rigorous, and grounded in what is happening both in Perú and beyond.

As a Peruvian who was replanted in the US, I move between worlds, in relationship with both and shaped by each. This is something many of us in the diaspora live quietly. We learn to translate contexts, to hold different ways of seeing, and to remain connected across places that continue to inform who we are and how we contribute.

In Awaken Your Roots, I draw from Andean wisdom and ongoing research to explore this way of living. From this perspective, life is understood through relationship to land, lineage, and community. Belonging is not about choosing one place over another, but about how we remain in reciprocity with what we are part of.

The question is not only how we adapt, but what becomes possible when we remain in relationship with both, in reciprocity, contributing to each as we are transformed by both.

I leave with pride and a sense of hope for the human potential we carry, not only individually, but collectively, as we continue shaping our Peruvian society, contributing to U.S. society, and showing up in the world from where we each stand.
